Born in Sacramento, Ethel Hoskins has lived at Joyful Ranch her entire life. She was raised on the Ranch by a family deeply connected to its history—her grandfather was William James Pleasants, and her mother was Ruth Pleasants-Hoskins.
Ethel graduated from Winters High School and continued her education at UC Davis, Solano Community College, and California State University, Sacramento, where she earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
She spent 38 years as an educator with the Vacaville Unified School District, teaching third, fourth, and fifth grades and serving as a reading specialist and mentor teacher. Now retired from education, Ethel works full time caring for and preserving Joyful Ranch.
Her lifelong connection to the property has created a strong commitment to protecting the Ranch’s history, natural resources, peaceful character, and legacy for future generations.
Current Projects
Ethel’s current work includes conservation efforts throughout the property, with a particular focus on Pleasants Creek, overseeing the ongoing care of the Ranch, and writing a book documenting and celebrating its history.
